Quick answers to the most common questions.

Wear whatever makes you feel great! If you’re unsure, feel free to bring along a change of wardrobe. Clothing with prints, patterns and textures works well with the wet plate process. Solid colors are fine too, but we recommend sticking to medium-tones. Avoid wearing white or black, and bear in mind that colors like blues and violets turn white, while reds and oranges/yellows tend to darken to almost black in this process (see below image for reference).  

For couple having their portraits taken together, we suggest wearing contrasting colors to one another.

We often hear, “I wouldn’t look like myself if I didn’t have my glasses on!” We understand how important they can be to your identity. However, making tintype images requires UV light, and lots of it! Therefore, if your lenses have a UV block (as most modern lenses do) they will darken to varying extents depending on the level of UV block on the lens. If your lenses are transitional to sunglasses in sunlight, they will also turn black in your tintype. Additionally, our studio uses strobe lighting, which can create further challenges for those wearing glasses. 

If you cannot forego wearing your glasses, a great solution is to bring an older pair with the lenses popped out. This allows you to keep your signature look while avoiding the issues with the UV light. Your local eyewear provider can show you how to safely remove the lenses, and this is best done with an older or spare pair. If this isn’t an option for you, we’ll do our best to work with your glasses, with your understanding of the potential outcomes beyond our control.

Yes! We encourage you to come to your session with ideas! If your vision includes props or costumes, even better! You will be able to change your wardrobe while at Evoke, so you do not need to come dressed for your session. Please feel free to contact us with any questions regarding props, costumes, or ideas/visions for your session.

Absolutely! However, you must inform us prior to your session, so we can discuss your expectations for the image and clothing options for you based on your pet’s color.

No. All plates need to be thoroughly washed, dried, and varnished to be complete. Varnishing is what helps preserve your image forever. You will receive your tintype via USPS approximately one week after your session.

No. Your $50 deposit will be applied as a credit to your total due at the end of your session.

While Evoke is located in a residential neighborhood, there is ample street parking on the designated side of the street.

Your session will begin with a discussion surrounding the wet plate process and history of tintype photography, while we enjoy wine and cheese. You will also have an opportunity to view real tintype images from the mid-1800’s. We will talk about the approach to your portrait, then we’ll head into the studio, and that’s when the fun really begins!
